A desire to help without expectation of Reward

See the sharing of a volunteer from Kalghatgi, in Dharwad district who speaks about giving timely support to save the life of a young man in the village, and then refusing the money which the grateful family offered him, because, for him “Saving the life was enough.”

A gesture from the heart

Ramu is a young man from Koppal, who got an opportunity to understand about HIV, when he and his friends put up a streetplay in their village on that issue. Much later, when he chanced to come across a person who had died due to HIV and where the community was hesitating to even touch […]

The example set by a woman leader

Parvathamma is a SHG leader in her village. She used her influence and her position to support two women affected by HIV who were facing discrimination in her communities, and helped them lead a self-sufficient life. Watch this video of Parvatamma’s sharing…. A brief summary of her sharing…. There was a young couple in my […]

A word of support at the right time

This is the story of a lady, a care volunteer, who was there to support a young man, when he discovered his HIV status. It is translated as closely as possible to her own narration of the experience. I had taken my younger brother to the testing centre for HIV testing, before his wedding. There, […]

Keeping up the promise

This is the story of a man who as a volunteer had helped a HIV positive woman get admitted to the care centre when she was very sick. He was motivated to help her, even though he was not in any way related to her, nor had any prior acquaintance with her. He made a […]

Samraksha is a development organization which has been working with communities for more than two decades now. Samraksha started its work in the field of HIV and reproductive sexual health, and has always been committed to working with the communities in order to prevent the spread of HIV and reduce its impact on the affected people. In order to do this, we have always used strengths based approach and worked with different communities – communities of identity like those of women in sex…

The example set by a woman leader

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 8:51am 2 Comments

Samraksha recently organized an inspiration sharing event for community volunteers to share their experiences.

This is a powerful sharing by a woman leader Parvatamma on how she helped fight stigma in the community through her personal action and ensured adequate livelihood for women affected by HIV in her community.

AIDS Action Committee : Demonstrating community involvement in HIV response

Posted on July 28, 2010 at 10:55am 5 Comments

We have in the past shared about the role of AIDS Action Committees, an informal group of people, mostly opinion leaders of the community (political or religious leaders, writers, teachers, social activists etc), who encourage, and initiate community actions. Specially, they act as an effective stigma redressal body, from within the community, who by setting up their own examples of…

Dear Divya,

Welcome to the Community Action Day group! Nice to have you with us. May I request you to share on the community wall in the CAD group with which groups you plan to facilitate the day? It will help those who are facilitating with same groups elsewhere to connect with Samraksha.

Warmly,

Rituu

Dear Divya, that was a wonderful blog you wrote. Short, concise stories but with a message and a human touch that is admirable. Reading it in the morning, I not only learned more again about inclusion, but it will influence during today the way I interact with people.

Thank you, Gaston
